Communicating Pride
Welcome to Pride Month on the Out Front Blog. As we did in June of last year, this month we’ll be posting our thoughts about “the meaning of pride for gay and lesbian communications.” While not every post will focus on Pride, each one of us will write at least one entry on the topic, so you should get a diversity of thoughts and opinions on the topic throughout the month.
In some cases, our posts will be original thoughts about what we think of communicating, celebrating or considering “pride.” In other cases, we’ll post Q&As with community leaders and notables in the world of business and communications. We have some interesting things planned and look forward to sharing our insights (and those of others) with you over the next four weeks.
Each pride-related post will include the photo image above so that it can easily and quickly be identified as a “pride” post. We’ll also blog about other non-pride related topics this month, so look for the “pride” image if you’re looking for pride-related topics. We’ve also added a new “pride” category to the list on the right, so you can always use that for quick reference, too.
One more thing about pride. June is when Pride Month is traditionally celebrated, and many cities host their pride celebrations during this time: New York, San Francisco, Toronto, Washington, etc. However, not everyone hosts pride in this four-week window. For example, celebrations in Buenos Aires and Palm Springs (LINKS) take place in November. We’re celebrating Pride Month in June because this is the month most commonly associated with Pride and because this is the month in which most businesses announce new gay and lesbian-focused outreach programs, surveys or other initiatives.
We hope you enjoy our thoughts about the meaning of pride in 2008. In the meantime, if you’d like to check out some of our past thoughts on the topic, check out posts by Steve, Eddy and Peter.
And finally, what do you think of Pride? Is it still relevant to your life? Is it a good idea for marketers and others to use it as a communications vehicle? Share your thoughts with us in the comments and perhaps they’ll end up in future posts.
Happy Pride Month!
